In a nutshell
  • Appointed as an expert in the Commission set up by the Commissioner for the reconstruction after the earthquake of Salò (Italy) of Nov.24, 2004. The Commission drafted the guidelines concerning the modality for the reconstruction and for the retrofitting and repair projects. The committee has revised over 100 projects concerning historical and monumental buildings of the Garda lake area.
  • Appointed as seismic engineering expert in the Commission set up by the Commissioner of Regione Lombardia for the reconstruction after the earthquake of Emilia Romagna and Lombardia of May, 2009
  • Prof. Riva was local coordinator of the program concerning the development of "Displacement Based Design Methods for precast concrete buildings" within the research program "Development of innovative approaches for the design of reinforced concrete, steel, and composite structures," part of the 2005-2008 RELUIS-DPC research agreement, coordinated by Profs. G.M. Calvi and M.J.N. Priestley.
  • He teaches Seismic Design and Design of r.c. and p.c. structures in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bergamo.
Author and co-author of more than 200 scientific papers in International Journals dealing with:
  • seismic behaviour of r.c. structures, with particular emphasis on the behaviour of structural walls and of precast concrete elements;
  • seismic retrofitting of historical buildings;
  • non-linear analysis of r.c. structures;
  • behaviour of r.c. structures under fire conditions.

  • Through his academic and professional activities, he has obtained laboratory, field and design experience in strengthening structures using innovative materials as well as monitoring and field assessment through in-situ load testing of both buildings and bridges. He has had the opportunity to present and publish a variety of technical papers in the field of infrastructure retrofitting and load testing;
  • he gained experience in structural design both with the Eurocodes, ACI 318 building code and British Standards;
  • he is member in the technical committees of American Concrete Institute and serves as an active voting member on ACI Committee 437-Strength Evaluation of Existing Concrete Buildings, 342- Evaluation of Concrete Bridges and Bridge Elements and 440-Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement;
  • he serves as a reviewer for several refereed journals such as: Journal of Composites for Construction (ASCE), Journal of Bridge Engineering (ASCE), Structural Journal (ACI).
His research activity deals with following topics:
  • retrofitting using innovative materials such as fiber composite materials, known as FRP;

    Luigi Coppola

    In a nutshell
    Luigi Coppola's scientific activity is documented by publications on materials and, in particular, focused on construction materials in the following fields:
    • admixtures and mineral additives for mortars and concrete;
    • deterioration, durability and repair of concrete structures;
    • design of the concrete composition (mix-design);
    • deterioration and restoration of historical buildings;
    • Corrosion and protection of rebars in reinforced concrete and reinforced pre-cast concrete structures.
    The results of Luigi Coppola's research activity can be summarized in 250 original papers, 17 books, 1 patent.
    In June 2000 Luigi Coppola was conferred an award for the "Outstanding and sustained contributions to enhance the Durability of Concrete" by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Canadian Institute of Materials, Energy and Transportation (CANMET).

    • He is currently teaching Advanced Structural Analysis and Design of steel, timber and masonry structures (MSc in Building Engineering) and Precast Structures (MSc in Civil ENgineering).
    • He is member of the Faculty Board of the PhD School in Structural, Earthquake and Geotechnical Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Politecnico di Milano.
    • He is currently member of the Scientific Board and of the executive board (Giunta) of his department and member of the executive board of the School of Building Engineering-Architecture.
    • He has been Fulbright visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Cement Based Materials, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (USA) in 2006 and invited lecturer at Beijing Jiaotong University (People’s Republic of China) in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015.
    • He is currently chairman of ACI TC 544-Fibre Reinforced Concrete and of fib TG 4.3-Structural Design with highly flowable concrete. He is also member of RILEM TC MRP – Measuring rheological properties of concrete and voting member of ACI TC 237-Self consolidating concrete and ACI TC 241-Nanotechnology of concrete and associate member of ACI 239-Ultra High Performance Concrete.     • He has been/is member of several Organization and Scientific Committees of International Conferences
    His main research interests include advanced cement based materials, such as self compacting concrete, fibre reinforced and ultra-high performance concrete: he has broadly investigated these topics, ranging from experimental identification of material physical and mechanical properties, and numerical modellingin the framework of fracture and damage mechanics, to their structural applications, including retrofitting of existing structures. He is author of more than 200 papers in peer reviwed journals, conference proceedings and book chapters.

    • Prof. Gambarova has coordinated a number of National Projects on the safety and durability of high-performance concrete (1995-2004); he has been a member of various FIB Task Groups, and is an ASCE fellow and an ACI member;
    • as a consultant, Prof. Gambarova has interacted with: Italian Ministry of Public Works, Italian National Research Authority - CNR, Italian Authority for Energy - ENEA, with Italcementi Group and with Milan Waste-Water Treatment Authority, on innovative and durable concretes, also within European Projects;
    • Visiting positions: Northwestern University (Evanston-Chicago, 1978 and 1982) upon invitation by Professor Zdenek Bazant; and EPFL-Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland, 2006), upon invitation by Professor Aurelio Muttoni.

His research concerns earthquake engineering and dynamics of structures, nonstructural components, r/c structures and precast structures;
    • he is member of ACI and of the fib committees TG 6.17 "Retrofitting and repairing of precast structures in seismic areas" and TG 8 "Irregular and Complex Structures".
    The topics of his publications can be divided according to three large areas strongly connected to the large area of Constructions Technique, i.e.:
